Influence is "a power affecting a person, thing or course of events" - especially one that operates without direct or apparent effort.
So essentially, influence distilled down is the ability to win the heart and soul of another person. This is done through the strength of your character and personhood.
Does this make influence more potent than authority?
We all pass a little bit of ourselves on to each other daily. It is how we lead and move others towards good or bad things. It is how we share what is inside of us. It can become contagious if we allow it.
How does that happen?
It comes through our character. All those attitudes, values, and other life-shaping virtues have grown inside us. All these are passed on to us, and we pass them on to others. So, I would make sure you like what you see in yourself! Especially if you want to be a gift and not a curse to others!
Where does your influence come from?
Are you filling yourself up with good things? Do you have a right relationship with God? Nothing matters more than that, first and foremost. It directly relates to the kind of relationships you have with others. That investment directly relates to the size of your influence in other lives.
History has shown us that power and command can't win people's hearts.
Instead, authentic influence is birthed inside a person, coming from who that person is and affecting the hearts of others.
Changing how a person feels about something creates a direct impact on a person's actions. It also impacts what they believe and what they are committed to.
What is feeding your character?
Are you surrounding yourself with like-minded people diving deep into both sides of influence? I encourage you to build a deep relationship between character and influence. The result will be profound!
Can I help you discover who you indeed are? Why do you do things the way you do them? Why can you feel disconnected when you step into new relationships? Or if you never reasonably feel yourself entirely inside an existing relationship.
